    Billiards with Spatial Memory

    Many classes of active matter develop spatial memory by encoding information in space, leading to complex pattern formation. It has been proposed that spatial memory can lead to more efficient navigation and collective behaviour in biological systems and influence the fate of synthetic systems. This raises important questions about the fundamental properties of dynamical systems with spatial memory. We present a framework based on mathematical billiards in which particles remember their past trajectories and react to them. Despite the simplicity of its fundamental deterministic rules, such a system is strongly non-ergodic and exhibits highly-intermittent statistics, manifesting in complex pattern formation. We show how these self-memory-induced complexities emerge from the temporal change of topology and the consequent chaos in the system. We study the fundamental properties of these billiards and particularly the long-time behaviour when the particles are self-trapped in an arrested state. We exploit numerical simulations of several millions of particles to explore pattern formation and the corresponding statistics in polygonal billiards of different geometries. Our work illustrates how the dynamics of a single-body system can dramatically change when particles feature spatial memory and provide a scheme to further explore systems with complex memory kernels.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    When worry about climate change leads to climate action:How values, worry and personal responsibility relate to various climate actions

    The IPCC's report on Global Warming of 1.5°C positioned climate change as one of the most worrying issues mankind has ever faced. Although many people worry about climate change, there is still much unknown about the origins and outcomes of worry about climate change; particularly, whether and how it can motivate specific and personal climate actions. The current paper investigates this critical relationship with data from the European Social Survey Round 8 (44,387 respondents from 23 countries). As expected, the more individuals worried about climate change, the more likely they were to take and support climate action. Yet, the process through which this association occurred differed between actions. Specifically, worry was both directly and indirectly, via feelings of personal responsibility to reduce climate change, associated with climate policy support; whereas worry was mostly indirectly associated with personal climate mitigation behaviours, via personal responsibility. In addition, worry about climate change appears partly rooted in biospheric values (i.e., caring about nature and the environment), and biospheric values were also clearly, directly and positively related to personal climate mitigation behaviours. The relationships were highly consistent across countries but varied somewhat in size. The results show how generic feelings about climate change can directly and indirectly affect both climate policy support and personal climate mitigation behaviours, thereby providing critical insights for science and policy making

    Deep learning-based detection and segmentation of diffusion abnormalities in acute ischemic stroke

    Background: Accessible tools to efficiently detect and segment diffusion abnormalities in acute strokes are highly anticipated by the clinical and research communities. Methods: We developed a tool with deep learning networks trained and tested on a large dataset of 2,348 clinical diffusion weighted MRIs of patients with acute and sub-acute ischemic strokes, and further tested for generalization on 280 MRIs of an external dataset (STIR). Results: Our proposed model outperforms generic networks and DeepMedic, particularly in small lesions, with lower false positive rate, balanced precision and sensitivity, and robustness to data perturbs (e.g., artefacts, low resolution, technical heterogeneity). The agreement with human delineation rivals the inter-evaluator agreement; the automated lesion quantification of volume and contrast has virtually total agreement with human quantification. Conclusion: Our tool is fast, public, accessible to non-experts, with minimal computational requirements, to detect and segment lesions via a single command line. Therefore, it fulfills the conditions to perform large scale, reliable and reproducible clinical and translational research

    Microbleeds, Cerebral Hemorrhage, and Functional Outcome After Stroke Thrombolysis: Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We assessed whether the presence, number, and distribution of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) on pre-intravenous thrombolysis MRI scans of acute ischemic stroke patients are associated with an increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or poor functional outcome. METHODS: We performed an individual patient data meta-analysis, including prospective and retrospective studies of acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator. Using multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression, we investigated associations of pre-treatment CMB presence, burden (1, 2-4, ≥5, and >10), and presumed pathogenesis (cerebral amyloid angiopathy defined as strictly lobar CMBs and noncerebral amyloid angiopathy) with symptomatic ICH, parenchymal hematoma (within [parenchymal hemorrhage, PH] and remote from the ischemic area [remote parenchymal hemorrhage, PHr]), and poor 3- to 6-month functional outcome (modified Rankin score >2). RESULTS: In 1973 patients from 8 centers, the crude prevalence of CMBs was 526 of 1973 (26.7%). A total of 77 of 1973 (3.9%) patients experienced symptomatic ICH, 210 of 1806 (11.6%) experienced PH, and 56 of 1720 (3.3%) experienced PHr. In adjusted analyses, patients with CMBs (compared with those without CMBs) had increased risk of PH (odds ratio: 1.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.09-2.07; P=0.013) and PHr (odds ratio: 3.04; 95% confidence interval: 1.73-5.35; P10 CMBs independently predicted poor 3- to 6-month outcome (odds ratio: 1.85; 95% confidence interval: 1.10-3.12; P=0.020; and odds ratio: 3.99; 95% confidence interval: 1.55-10.22; P=0.004, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Increasing CMB burden is associated with increased risk of ICH (including PHr) and poor 3- to 6-month functional outcome after intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke

    Slamsex in The Netherlands among men who have sex with men (MSM): use patterns, motives, and adverse effects

    Background: This paper describes an online survey of men who have sex with men (MSM) and use drugs before or during sex ('chemsex') via injection ('slamming' or 'practising slamsex'). Approximately 15-30% of the MSM population in The Netherlands have practiced chemsex at some point, and 0.5-3.1% of them ever had 'slamsex'. This study investigates which substances are used in The Netherlands during slamsex, the motives for slamming and the health risks involved. Method: In total, 175 MSM from The Netherlands, who had used substances before or during sex via injection completed an ad hoc online questionnaire designed for this study. Results: Mean age of respondents was 47.8 years. During chemsex, almost every substance was used; the most common substances that were injected (slammed) were 3-methylmethcathinone (3-MMC), methamphetamine, ketamine, 4-methylethcathinone (4-MEC) and mephedrone (4-MMC). Reasons for slamming were mainly to experience a more intense rush and longer sex. Virtually none of the respondents used a condom during slamsex, but needles were almost never shared or used only once. Slammers reported health problems associated with injecting drugs (skin problems, collapsed veins and infections). Of most concern were the psychological symptoms reported by about three-quarters of respondents (e.g. insomnia, sadness, depressed mood, anxiety, suicidal tendencies). About half of respondents reported some degree of loss of control or concerns about their slamming behaviour. Conclusion: Results show that slamsex is associated with consciously chosen sexual risk behaviours and risk-avoidance slam behaviours. This study may contribute to the reinforcement of accessible, non-judgmental and well informed prevention and harm reduction activities to support MSM practising slamsex

    Prediction of Stroke Onset is Improved by Relative Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery and Perfusion Imaging Compared to the Visual Diffusion-Weighted Imaging/Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery Mismatch

    Background and Purpose - Acute stroke patients with unknown time of symptom onset are ineligible for thrombolysis. The diffusion-weighted imaging and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) mismatch is a reasonable predictor of stroke within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, and its clinical usefulness in selecting patients for thrombolysis is currently being investigated. The accuracy of the visual mismatch rating is moderate, and we hypothesized that the predictive value of stroke onset within 4.5 hours could be improved by including various clinical and imaging parameters. Methods - In this study, 141 patients in whom magnetic resonance imaging was obtained within 9 hours after symptom onset were included. Relative FLAIR signal intensity was calculated in the region of nonreperfused core. Mean T max was calculated in the total region with T max >6 s. Mean relative FLAIR, mean T max, lesion volume with T max >6 s, age, site of arterial stenosis, core volume, and location of infarct were analyzed by logistic regression to predict stroke onset time before or after 4.5 hours. Results - Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed an area under the curve of 0.68 (95% confidence interval 0.59-0.78) for the visual diffusion-weighted imaging/FLAIR mismatch, thereby correctly classifying 69% of patients with an onset time before or after 4.5 hours. Age, relative FLAIR, and T max increased the accuracy significantly (P<0.01) to an area under the curve of 0.82 (95% confidence interval 0.74-0.89). This new predictive model correctly categorized 77% of patients according to stroke onset before versus after 4.5 hours. Conclusions - In patients with unknown stroke onset, the accuracy of predicting time from symptom onset within 4.5 hours is improved by obtaining relative FLAIR and perfusion imaging

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:In patients with acute stroke, the intensity of a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) lesion in the region of diffusion restriction is associated with time from symptom onset. We hypothesized that collateral status as assessed by the hypoperfusion intensity ratio could modify the association between time from stroke onset and FLAIR lesion intensity.METHODS:From the AX200 for ischemic stroke trial, 141 patients had appropriate FLAIR, diffusion-weighted imaging, and perfusion-weighted imaging. In the region of nonreperfused core, we calculated voxel-based relative FLAIR (rFLAIR) signal intensity. The hypoperfusion intensity ratio was defined as the ratio of the Tmax >10 s lesion over the Tmax >6 s lesion volume. A hypoperfusion intensity ratio threshold of ≤0.4 was used to dichotomize good versus poor collaterals. We studied the interaction between collateral status on the association between time from symptom onset and FLAIR intensity.RESULTS:Time from symptom onset was associated with the rFLAIR intensity in the region of nonreperfused core (B=1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.0-1.1). We identified an interaction between this association and collateral status; an association was present between time and rFLAIR intensity in patients with poor collaterals (r=0.53), but absent in patients with good collaterals (r=0.17; P=0.04).CONCLUSIONS:Our findings show that the relationship between time from symptom onset and rFLAIR lesion intensity depends on collateral status. In patients with good collaterals, the development of an rFLAIR-positive lesion is less dependent on time from symptom onset compared with patients with poor collaterals
